Fat is essential and serves several important purposes including

  • Shock absorption

  • Insulation

  • Energy Stores

  • Sex appeal

When you consume more calories than you require some of this excess energy is stored in fat cells. At any specific body site, fat cells can achieve a maximum size. Once this size is reached they cannot enlarge further, at this point new fat cells can be produced.

Understanding our shape

After puberty accumulations of fat begin to appear. The development and location of these fat pads are different between men and women. The idealised female figure has a softer appearance and more alluring curves. Whereas the idealised male figure maximises muscle definition with minimal fat. The eventual size and shape of these deep fat deposits are a function of genetic predisposition and the amount of fat in the body.

Body fat in adults tends to increase gradually over time with individuals usually gaining fat according to a genetically predetermined pattern. Examples are accumulations of fat around the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks or arms. Fat in these areas can often be resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is the equivalent of being able to focus the effects of diet and a exercise on specific area of the body, producing a more natural appearing silhouette with virtually imperceptible scars.
